Start as an aesthetician, progress to medical aesthetician. Hands-on training in Coquitlam with real clients, small classes, and industry-recognized certification.
An aesthetician course is a professional training program that certifies you to perform skin care treatments — facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Hydrafacial, skin analysis, product protocols — in a salon, spa, or clinic setting. At BC Medical Aesthetic in Coquitlam, BC, our aesthetician training takes you from foundational skin care through advanced medical aesthetician-level modalities, all at one campus with hands-on practice on real clients.
The two paths target different career outcomes. Here is how they differ and how our program serves each:
Most graduates start with the foundational Aesthetic Dermatology course, gain 6-12 months of client experience, then return for advanced or specialist training as their career grows and their earning potential scales.
Skin anatomy and the aging process. Dermal layers, the role of collagen and elastin, how UV damage and intrinsic aging change skin structure, and how different treatment modalities address each. Without this foundation, technique alone produces inconsistent results.
Skin typing and condition assessment. Fitzpatrick scale (I-VI) for melanin response, Glogau classification (I-IV) for photo-aging, identification of common conditions (acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, sensitive skin, barrier dysfunction), and how treatment protocols must adapt to each.
Active ingredient science. Retinoids, AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic), BHAs (salicylic), vitamin C, peptides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide — how they work at the cellular level, how to layer them, and how to explain their role to clients in plain language.
Hands-on facial treatments. Double cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, mask application, LED therapy, high-frequency treatment, massage techniques, and aftercare. You will perform complete 60-90 minute facial protocols on real clients under direct supervision at our Coquitlam campus.
Chemical peels. Peel acid selection, pH and concentration, skin preparation protocols, neutralization timing, application technique, and post-peel care. Our peel training covers superficial to medium-depth peels — you will apply actual peel solutions to real clients, not simulators.
Contraindication screening and consultation. Medical history intake, medication interactions (Accutane, photosensitizers, anticoagulants), pregnancy considerations, recent surgical procedures, and how to decline a treatment professionally when a contraindication is identified.
Client retention and consultation skills. Realistic expectation setting, treatment series planning, home-care recommendations, follow-up protocols, and how to communicate value. The difference between a $60 facial client and a $600-per-month membership client is usually the aesthetician's consultation skill, not their technique.
The British Columbia skin care industry is growing steadily. Statistics Canada beauty services data shows year-over-year growth in professional skin care services every year since 2018, with particular strength in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and Kelowna.
Entry-level aestheticians in BC typically earn $35,000-$45,000 per year base plus tips and commission. Experienced aestheticians with specialty certifications in laser, injectables, or medical aesthetics commonly earn $60,000-$90,000+, especially when working on commission structures common in medical spas.
Independent aestheticians who rent a room or operate mobile services can earn significantly more — hourly rates of $80-$150 are standard in Metro Vancouver for experienced specialists. Many of our graduates transition from employee to independent practice within 2-3 years of certification.
The strongest career upside comes from stacking specialty certifications. An aesthetician with laser, microneedling, and injectable training earns substantially more than one with only facial certification. Our course structure is designed around this layering — start broad, then specialize.
British Columbia does not require a provincial licence for most aesthetician services — facials, peels, microdermabrasion, Hydrafacial, and product consultation can be performed with industry training and certification alone.
Injectables (Botox, dermal fillers) in BC must be administered by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse. Aestheticians cannot inject, but can train to support injectable practitioners and cross-sell complementary services.
Laser treatments do not require a specific provincial licence but require documented training from a recognized institution — our certifications meet this standard.
Insurance coverage (Beauty and Body Professionals Canada, HUB International) requires a recognized certification before issuing professional liability coverage. Our graduates qualify for coverage immediately on completion.
Real clients, not simulators. Every aesthetician course includes clinical practicum hours on live clients under direct supervision. You graduate with real treatment experience, not just a certificate.
Full medical aesthetics pathway on site. Most BC aesthetician schools only teach foundational skin care. We teach the full progression from foundational aesthetician through medical aesthetician-level laser and device training — so you do not have to change schools to advance.
Small classes, one-on-one feedback. Limited enrollment means you get direct instructor attention during every treatment. Our head instructor Manucher Nick personally supervises clinical sessions.
Industry-recognized certification. All programs are instructor-certified through the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC). Our graduates work at clinics across BC, Alberta, Ontario, and in several US markets.
